Greater Mekong Subregion Artist Residency 2025 (GMS)
Tales from the Driftwoods explores landscape histories and local narratives that have faded or invisible in the Mekong River today. Drawing from oral histories, personal memories, and community-based research by local fishers in Chiang Khan, with a critical reflection on external perspectives that view the river only as a source of hydroelectric power.
These stories are illustrated and carved onto folding wooden screens made from driftwood collected by the fishers. Scattered across the panels are plug-shaped cutouts representing countries involved in the river's changes. Light passes clearly through these openings from the outside, while the painted stories require careful viewing against the light to be seen, prompting attention to things that are overlooked, unseen, or no longer present.The work is presented as a site-specific installation on a Hug Chiang Khan Group’s raft, integrated into the ongoing exhibition "Tales of Mekong River through the Local Fishery" and the routine of the local fishers, who often use the raft as a mooring dock and resting place when no visitors are around. Co-created with the community, the work is rooted in the fishers’ own stories and experiences, and allows them to control its presence by opening or closing the folding panels, making the artwork a part of the raft itself

นิทานจากไม้ลอยน้ำ สำรวจประวัติศาสตร์ภูมิทัศน์และเรื่องเล่าท้องถิ่นที่เลือนหายหรือมองไม่เห็นในแม่น้ำโขงปัจจุบัน ผ่านเรื่องเล่าปากต่อปาก ความทรงจำ และงานวิจัยของชาวประมงเชียงคาน ขนานไปกับตั้งคำถามต่อมุมมองจากภายนอกที่มองเห็นแม่น้ำเป็นเพียงแหล่งผลิตกระแสไฟฟ้า เรื่องราวเหล่านี้จะถูกวาดและสลักลงบนม่านเฟี้ยมไม้จากเศษไม้ที่ลอยมาตามแม่น้ำโขง ซึ่งชาวประมงท้องถิ่นเป็นผู้เก็บให้ มีรูปลั๊กไฟเจาะกระจาย ของประเทศที่มีบทบาทต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงในแม่น้ำโขง แสงจะลอดผ่านรูจากข้างนอก เห็นได้ชัดเจน ขณะที่เรื่องราวบนไม้ย้อนแสง ชวนให้ตั้งใจมองเพื่อเห็นสิ่งที่ไม่ถูกมอง มองไม่เห็น หรือไม่มีให้เห็นแล้ว ผลงานจัดแสดงให้กลมกลืนไปกับนิทรรศการ “ประมงไทบ้านเล่าขานน้ำของ” ที่มีอยู่บนแพ และวิถีชีวิตของชาวประมง ที่มักจะใช้แพนี้เป็นท่าจอดเรือและนั่งนอนพักผ่อนหย่อนใจเมื่อไม่มีคน งานนี้ร่วมกันสร้างโดยมีเรื่องราวและประสบการณ์ของชาวประมงเป็นหลัก จนถึงการจัดการการมีหรือไม่มีงานนี้ตามความต้องการด้วยการเปิดปิดบานเฟี้ยมในฐานะที่งานชิ้นนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแพ

I was searching for materials while also gathering information. I hoped to use driftwood carried down the Mekong River.
That day, a lot of wood was floating by. As we sat and talked on the raft, one of the fishers noticed a small piece of wood barely breaking the surface. With excitement in his voice, he said, “That’s good wood,” and quickly set off in his boat to retrieve it. When he returned and we hauled it aboard, it turned out to be a large, solid, perfectly rectangular slab of hardwood.
He told us, “Good wood like this never makes it this far. People usually pick it up long before. If something like this shows up, it’s not just by chance.”
And in truth, behind this little miracle was none other than this very group of fishers.
