In saying these things, I went to sleep, a group exhibition featuring works by Cole Lu, Christian Quin Newell, and Supawich Weesapen. The exhibition draws its title from Of Virtue, a fourth-century text by the Alexandrian alchemist Zosimos, who used dreams to unlock the mysteries of the material world.
Inspired by this sense of alchemical slippage—where boundaries shift between slumber and waking, solid and liquid, and body and spirit—the three artists take on the role of shape-shifters, engaging in a kinetic play with the elements. Here, matter is torn apart and reassembled, creating new forms of substance and self. Their works ruminate in an instability of form, offering passages we can traverse on route to becoming.
I’m inspired by the folklore of Bakteo Waterfall (Huay Luang) in Ubon Ratchathani, where a man named Teo, punished by the forest, met his death. His spirit later appeared in a dream, urging the living to rename the waterfall to lift the curse, which vanished after the change. Parallel to this story, I paint the reverie between the living and the dead, as well as the reverie between the old and the new name.
"A group of friends went into the forest to collect beehives near a waterfall without performing any rituals or informing the spirits of the land. Upon reaching the waterfall, a man named Teo used a vine to lower himself from a cliff to hit the beehive. Suddenly, some said Teo saw it, some said his friends did; the vine turned into a snake. Some said Teo, some said his friends, cut the vine in panic, causing Teo to fall and die. After that, the waterfall was named "Bak Teo."Since then, accidents occurred frequently at the waterfall. Some said it was relatives of the deceased, some claimed locals dreamed of Teo, who told them to rename the waterfall to "Huai Luang" because "Bak Teo" was inauspicious. After the name change, no further accidents happened at the waterfall. Since then, it became Huai Luang Waterfall. A large and famous waterfall in Ubon Ratchathani.
